I swear my cat is learning English

As far as cats go, mine haven't always exactly been the brightest of the bunch. However, Sienna seems to be bucking the trend lately.

So we've got this little ritual. She always hangs out in the bathroom with me while I'm getting ready for bed. I can call out "bathroom time Sienna!" from upstairs and she'll come running up to me making little chriping noises as she goes. She also gets upset if she is faced with a closed door. She'll usually paw at the door and cry until she is let in.

Last night was no exception. I mistakenly closed the bathroom door without inviting her upstairs. While I was washing my face, she starts her pawing and crying at the door. She started getting a little fiesty and Brian told her to knock it off. A few moments later I open the door to find her laying on the floor a couple feet from the bathroom. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: Come on in to the bathroom Sienna (holds the door open and gestures towards bathroom)
Sienna: (half lidded stare)
Me: Come on - it's bathroom time! (gesutres again towards bathroom)
Sienna: (half lidded stare)
Me: Sienna - are you coming in or not?
Sienna: Mer. (a short, clipped meow)
Me: Come on Sienna. Come into the bathroom.
Sienna: Mer.
Me: Are you mad at me for ignoring you? Is that why you won't come in?
Sienna: Err-ow.
Me: Ok - I'm sorry.
Sienna: Mer.
Me: I'm sorry I didn't invite you in and that you were locked out. Will you come in the bathroom now?
Sienna: Mew.

She then GOT UP AND CAME INTO THE BATHROOM!!!!

I swear I am not making this up. I am convinced she was waiting for me to apologize. It was just a damn weird experience.

Financial Freedom....It's Within Our Grasp!

Wow - 3 blogs from me in one week - amazing I know!! Especially given how hectic these last few days have been!

Anywho...I wanted to get this down on virtual paper before any of it starts to fade away. I am so fired up, excited and motivated right now because getting out of debt and on the right financial track is getting really close for us, and damn if I'm not totally psyched about it!!

Just a little over a year ago, I looked at Brian and said "we've gotta do something about this. The credit cards have to go away, and we need to get out of consumer debt." This desire prompted me to take action and was the first step towards achieving a huge goal.

What did I do? I drafted up a plan and put us on a very aggressive debt pay down schedule. I put together some excel charts and created the visual representations of the milestones we'd be hitting along the way and posted this information on the fridge so that we could see the progress we were making every day. The goal was to have the credit card debt erased by November of 2007. That was 18 months from when we put the plan in place.

I am very excited to report that we are 4 months away from this monumental achievement and will be 1 month ahead of schedule!!

In the midst of all the aggressive pay down, Brian's company was sold, and he was offered an attractive package at the new gig. As a result, we realized we had to start getting serious about getting some tax strategy in place. I started doing some research which has lead me to numerous resources around building wealth (and keeping it!), managing your money smartly and how to stay out of debt.

If you are interested, the 3 books I've most recently been consumed with (and HIGHLY recommend) are:

1) The Millionaire Next Door
2) The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom
3) Debt-Proof Living

In one of the books, The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, the author talks about respecting your money. The basic concept is that if you don't respect your money and start making smarter, wiser choices about what you do and how you think about money, you will effectively block yourself from earning/finding/making more money. Now when I first read this, I wrote it off as being a little too "other worldly" or spiritual for my taste. But somehow this concept stuck in my head. Funny thing is, once I had the chance to sleep on it and ponder it at the back of my mind, the realization hit me like a bolt of lightning.

When we were fully entrenched in our pattern of reckless spending, we were constantly stuck in a paycheck to paycheck cycle. Extra $$ rarely came our way, and it was hard for us to hang on to bonus $$ that did wind up in our checking account. In 2006 we got hammered on taxes. Nailed with a huge lease penalty. Our savings started to seriously dwindle down. But then in the spring of '06, we started taking control of our debt and getting smart about making it a priority to pay it down. This meant we had to be smarter with the money we had at our disposal. We had to start making better choices and lay off the gut impulse to just buy buy buy!

When I look back and think about our financial situation since making that change, I realized a number of other things started to change. We are both working for successful companies that reward employees (unlike United and their "negative raises"). I get a couple of referral bonuses come in. We didn't get hammered so hard on our taxes this year. There was some stock that got paid out. My team at work is one of the fortunate few that will be getting a special bonus this summer.

That's when I made the connection. We took control of our financial disarray and started giving our money more respect. Suddenly (or so it seems), we are seeing better things come into our lives. Coincidence? Maybe. Luck? Possibly. You can take from it what you want, but I am going to choose to think of this as we are finally learning how to respect our money. And now we are being rewarded for doing so.

So what's next? Lot's of stuff!
1) We are paying ourselves first by doing things like substantially bumping up our 401Ks.
2) We've figured out where our money is going, established a budget and changed how we manage expenses.
3) We're creating a method to manage intermittent/surprise/annual/quarterly expenses and fund dream/fun/vacation plans.
4) We've separated our savings into it's own unique account and established what our savings goal will be.
5) We've chosen a financial adviser to help us with our investment decisions.
6) We've decided to establish a trust and will be planning our "estate".

I cannot believe how far we've come and how close we are to getting on track.

We are so close. I can't wait to be there!

STRAWBERRIES!!!!!

Before I get around to explaining the title of this post, lemme tell you about Saturday's activities. The original plan was to go to the Solstice Parade out in Fremont. Unfortunately, I had a very crabby Friday which lead me to feeling very anti-social on Saturday morning. Translation: this would make an exceptionally unhappy Lisa in dealing with the massive crowds the parade attracts. Besides, for some reason this year I felt like I didn't need to stare at more naked painted people riding bikes around.

So - this meant we went on a very impromptu driving adventure to the Olympic Peninsula. Had we planned our timing a wee bit better, we could've caught the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, British Columbia, but we'll have to save that for another time. It's a shame the weather wasn't a little better cuz I'm sure we'd have been treated to some amazing views of the Olympic Mtns. I'm not complaining too much because we did get to see some amazing scenery along the way and even stopped to visit a gift shop at a lavender farm. Our adventure tacked on 180 miles to the odometer and included 2 ferry trips - one from Seattle to Bainbridge Island and the other from Kingston to Edmonds.

As for the title of this entry, you guessed it!!! It's that time of year again! The time of year where Brian and I become just a wee bit obsessed with the prospect of all things strawberry and go out to Remlinger Farms and pick berries to our hearts content.

I didn't take any pics this year, but I assure you - these pictures are a VERY accurate representation of how many berries we picked again this year (that's 25 lbs of strawberries you're lookin' at!). I mean, for $0.75 a pound how can you NOT go a little nuts?

I've already made my strawberry bread. Tomorrow I make homemade strawberry ice cream and then the jamming begins!!! Mmmmm....strawberry jam!

The Gorge = WOW

Moving on....here's some more of what we've been keeping busy with.

On Saturday, we packed up a picnic lunch and took off for a trip to the other side of the mountains to go see John Mayer play at the Gorge. The day could not have been more perfect for a 150 mile roadtrip in the convertible to Central WA. Once we got over to the other side of the pass it started warming up quite a bit. About an hour in and it was 90+ degrees outside! I've forgotten what that kind of summer heat feels like. We stopped along the way at a very pretty rest area and had our picnic lunch. First time in 3+years we got to use that basket!!

Once we crossed the Columbia River, the view just kept getting more and more breathtaking. We stopped at the Wild Horses monument (about 12 miles away from the concert venue) to take a look around. Holy cow. The pictures simply do not do it justice. The view was simply stunning.

View from the "scenic viewpoint" (that's I-90 crossing the river)

The Wild Horses Monument

I so wish I brought my camera in to the venue - I could NOT get over how amazing the setting was! I've never seen anything like it before!! Here are some pictures from the website.

You can look straight thru the back of the stage and see the river cutting thru the valley. And the sun set right behind the stage turning the sky an amazing pinky hue.

As for the show itself, it was pretty amazing. We had awesome seats and finally seeing John Mayer in concert was so cool! Can you believe the guy changed guitars between every song? I think my favorite part of the show was where he did a 4 song acoustic set.

Here are the rest of the photos from Saturday.

On Sunday we took advantage of the continuing glorious weather and went to Juanita Beach in Kirkland. It was so nice to just chill out by the water (and use our picnic basket for a 2nd time!!) and relax. I felt very "urban sophisticate" cuz in Chicago, the only real beach time you can get is by going into the actual city and hitting up North Beach or something similar. All the city dwellers have the same thing in mind cuz they usually don't have a patch of green or sand to hang out on like you might in the 'burbs. Hard to describe, but I felt it fully.

Fast forwarding to Wednesday took us to the much coveted Police show!! It was really pretty darn cool to see a band play that hasn't been around for 25 years! The other nice thing is not having to suffer thru the crappier new music, cuz hey - 25 years!! We had great seats for a great price for this show as well thanks to Event Tix alias at MS.

That brings us up to this past weekend which was pretty quiet. Ran some errands, saw PotC 3 (thumbs down I'm sad to report), and made do with some good old fashioned laziness.

This upcoming weekend promises the Solstice Parade in Fremont and some long-awaited strawberry picking!!!

Memorial Day Weekend?! But it's the middle of June!!

So I just spent 30 min typing up the fun and witty entry all about our Memorial day activities. While I was looking for a specific picture to post, what happens? I somehow managed to close the stupid browser. Lost all of my work. SUCK.

So here's the short version.

Memorial Day Weekend

Friday:
Cleaned the house and cooked in advance for dinner with Rob and Anastasia the following evening.

Saturday:
Cailean got his follow-up check-up and the vet gave him a clean bill of health. He still has to take meds, but he's a much happier kitty these days.
Got my hair cut.
Rob and Anastasia came over. We had a great time hanging out. Rob got his belated bday gift, and we busted out the Wii.

Sunday:
We drove up to Canada for a ceiling fan. Yes - a ceiling fan. I had a really amusing backstory all typed up, but I'm not going to re-write it all again. Sorry.

Monday:
Hung out at the Folk Life Festival. Just like we did the first weekend after we moved out here two years ago.

Photos if you'd like to see 'em.
